lou chef/owner Mailea Weger and pastry chef Sierra Cody announced that they are hosting a bake sale and open air market with Be Good Market on the lou lawn to raise funds for ACLU Tennessee in an effort to help fight anti-trans legislation. On Sunday, June 13, 2021, lou and Be Good will offer goods from local and regional chefs and vendors from 10 a.m. until products are sold out.
It's June, and Pride is the inspiration for the event in a number of ways.
"Last year was the first Pride we had been open at lou, so we started (what I hope to be!) a long-standing tradition of celebrating our LGBTQ+ friends by raising funds for nonprofits that we believe are out there doing the truly hard work," Weger said. "This Pride happens to fall on the heels of some very hurtful & hyperlocal litigation. So, while connecting with ACLU of Tennessee, we thought honing in to raise money for anti-transgender legislation seemed like the best use of Nashville’s generous donations."
Wegers community activism is much broader than the LGBTQ+ community, of course. She regularly hosts community bake sales at lou benefiting organizations such as Thistle Farms, Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi, and the ACLU of Tennessee, featuring guest chefs and local business participants.
There are a lot of opinions out there about businesses involving themselves in so-called politics (human rights are not a political issue). And Weger strongly believes in the obligation to support marginalized communities.
"As a long-standing ally to the LGBTQ+ community and as a small business owner," Weger said, "it’s an honor to use any resource I can to help raise money or help rally a city who may feel unseen in the state they call home."
